Local woman recuperating from N.C. shark bite

LANCASTER --A Lancaster woman is recovering at home from a shark attack that occurred when she was on vacation on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Megan Konkler, 33, was spending her vacation with her husband, James, and two children, Jaxson, 4, and Layla, 10 months, near Nags Head Beach, when the incident occurred.

The family had been at the cottage for a couple of days when Konkler was enjoying the beach Thursday with her husband and son. Her sister, Emily, was watching the youngest at the cottage.

"Jaxson was running up until the water hit his feet and then running away and laughing," said Megan.

Jaxson was searching for shells in the sand when Megan decided to go into the water to wash the sand off her bathing suit.

"I went in right where the waves had been crashing, maybe waist deep," Megan said. "I remember even bending down to grab for some more cool shells for Jaxson."

That's when it happened.

"I felt something cut or bite my big toe. I thought it was a shell or maybe a crab and moved my foot away quickly," Megan said.

Then she looked down and spotted the shark next to her. She yelled for her husband and started to walk away, accidentally stepping on the shark, which then bit her on the foot.

"Even though it looked only about three feet long, it felt like a thousand pounds biting into my foot, and it held on for probably only a few seconds, but it seemed forever," Megan said. "I reached down and yanked on my leg and my foot came out of its mouth. It had cut right though the middle of my foot."

With blood pouring out of her foot, Megan, with the help of her husband, made her way to the cottage across the beach, through seven flights of stairs and a walkway.

They wrapped up her foot and drove her to Vidant Family Care, Hatteras Island's medical center, where she was treated by Dr. T. Bentley Crabtree. She ended up with 18 stitches in the top of her foot and five stitches on the underside of her foot.

"He seemed to think that my foot will be OK," Megan said.

In 2011, there were 29 shark attacks in the U.S., with no fatalities reported, according to the International Shark Attack File administered by the American Elasmobranch Society and the Florida Museum of Natural History. That was the lowest total since 1998, when there were 26 attacks.

But the incident isn't dampening Megan's fondness for the area she has been going to since she was a small child.

"My sister is going to be married there next week, so I'm headed back then," Megan said. "I'm going to get the stitches out when I'm there, but I've told everyone I'm not going into the water on this trip.

"This was really a fluke incident," Megan said. "I haven't, and no one in family has, been around when there was a shark attack before."
