Beach Patrol: Man bitten by shark in New Smyrna Beach
Surfer, 49, suffered minor puncture wounds in the attack, the first reported in Volusia this year.

Officials said a surfer was bitten by a shark in New Smyrna Beach on Friday, in the first reported shark attack of the year in Volusia County.

According to a Volusia County Beach Patrol spokeswoman, the 49-year-old man was coming back to shore about 3:30 p.m. Friday, when he was bitten while standing in three to four feet of water.

The man suffered only minor puncture wounds, and officers said he declined to be hospitalized. Beach Patrol said the bite was the first reported this year.

Though the man didn't get a look at it, the shark was believed to be a relatively small one — likely about one or two feet long, based on the wounds, officials said.

A 49-year-old surfer from Deltona got the year's first shark bite out of the way, a Volusia County Beach Patrol officer said Saturday.

Ronald White took a nibble to his right ankle Friday in about 3 feet of water off the Beachway Avenue approach in New Smyrna Beach, agency spokeswoman Capt. Tammy Marris said.

"By the bite, it was a pretty small shark -- probably a 1 to 2 footer," Marris said. White, who didn't see the shark that bit him, was treated for the minor injury on-scene and declined further treatment.

Marris said she hasn't seen sharks in the water this year, but she has seen several stingrays.
