Shark savages Victorian man off WA coast

February 13, 2011 - 1:25PM

A SHARK biting you on the elbow would discourage most people from going back in the water but not a 58-year-old Victorian man who said he would ‘‘probably’’ go snorkelling again.

Allen, who did not want to give his last name, was bitten 50 metres from shore late on Saturday afternoon while on holiday in Exmouth, Western Australia. He was returning to dry land after snorkelling for at least an hour with his wife when he felt something bite his elbow.

Allen, who hails from Numurkah near Shepparton, said the shark ‘‘came out of nowhere’’ and he never saw it.

He reckons he was only in about ‘‘eight feet’’ (2.4 metres) of water and that his wife caught a glimpse of the silver of the shark. ‘‘I just screamed at her get out. It was lucky it was only a fairly small one.’’

He said as the shark bit his elbow there was a large splash of water. There was little blood in the water and it was when the couple reached shore that he realised he’d been ‘‘slashed pretty bad’’ and the wound ‘‘really started bleeding’’.

Allen said he was lucky the bite, which he estimated to be about 12.5 centimetres, was on the elbow and not an artery.

Despite the bite he was out of hospital in an hour after receiving more than 30 stitches and some local anaesthetic. ‘‘I’m not even taking painkillers,’’ he said.

While Allen said he would ‘‘probably’’ snorkel again his wife had even less doubt telling him she would return to the water.
