Man bitten by shark at Avoca Beach

26 Dec 09 . 11:45am by Emma Herd.

A COPACABANA man was bitten by a shark while playing in the surf with his granddaughter at Avoca Beach on Saturday morning.
The incident happened at about 11am, while the 55-year-old surfboard manufacturer and the toddler were in the water alongside the rock pool.
Surf Life Saving Central Coast director of lifesaving Stuart Harvey said the man felt something on his leg while he was in the water.
``He shook it off and then realised what it was,’’ Harvey said.
``He didn’t get to see the shark but knew what it was due to the lacerations on his leg.’’
The man was treated at the scene and was in good spirits when he was transported to Gosford Hospital.
Harvey said the Lifesaver One rescue helicopter was called in from Sydney and couldn’t see anything in the water upon its arrival.
The beach was expected to be reopened by mid-afternoon.

AVOCA BEACH SHARK ENCOUNTER

December 26, 2009

A man is in hospital after being bitten on the leg by a shark while swimming with his young grand-daughter on the New South Wales Central Coast.

Local surfer John Sojoski was pushing his grand daughter onto a wave when he was bitten by a small shark at Avoca Beach this morning.

The Copacabana grandfather fought off the shark by kicking his leg in and out of the water, before being taken to Gosford Hospital with deep cuts to his calf.

The beach was closed off while the Westpac Rescue Helicopter searched the water but there was no sign of the shark.

A man has been bitten by a shark at Avoca Beach on the New South Wales central coast.

Surf Life Saving says a small shark latched onto the back of the man's foot when he stepped on it in shallow waters.

The man then kicked it with his other foot and it let go.

He has being transported to Gosford hospital after being treated for minor injuries on the scene and may need stitches.
