Johannesburg - The coach of the national Protea Shore Angling team, Tony Dell, was bitten by a shark near the Sunday's River Mouth on Friday.
Dell, 59, was coaching and assisting at the Free State's annual Shore Angling Competition when the incident happened about 2km north of the river mouth, said Richard Prinsloo, chairperson of the Eastern Province Shore Angling Association.
"He was helping an angler to measure the Raggie when a wave came in and lifted the shark," said Prinsloo. The ragged tooth shark then spun around and bit Dell on the calf.
"It was not an attack, it was an accident," said Prinsloo.
Dell, from Port Elizabeth, was taken to the Greenacres hospital in Port Elizabeth.
Hospital spokesperson Adele Kennedy said he was in a stable condition.
"He was admitted to casualties but moved to a general ward. He will be operated on," she said.
