Bourail drama: it was a great white shark

The assumption of specialists who examined the body of the rider suffered a fatal shark attack last Friday at Bourail has been challenged by new elements. Philippe Tirard, the IRD, it is a great white shark measuring at least four meters.

New Caledonia: How did you finally become convinced that it was a great white?

Philippe Tirard: Three species could correspond to the attack: the tiger, great white and bull. Examination of bites excluded the hypothesis of the tiger. Were the other two species. It must be admitted that we spent our time to obscure the great white because it usually spawn in cold water (17 ° C) and, in Caledonia, it seems rather observed in winter. We therefore looked for a bulldog, although doubts remained. These have been completely removed with short review of the victim. It has been inferred that this was an individual of at least four meters, which corresponds to a weight about a ton, although this remains to be refined. Finally, what remains unchanged is that it was indeed an attack type of food, as evidenced by the number of bites.

How to explain his presence so near the coast?

This is of course a hypothesis, but recent heavy rains that have swollen Nera (the river which flows at the spot of the attack) were able to carry dead animals. One can therefore easily imagine that the great white, which is a predator but a scavenger, has been drawn into the sector. Furthermore, this is disturbing in the attack is that the shark jumped out of the water to catch the victim directly. But when the sharks confuse surfers with a turtle, he is usually at the plate. This was not the case, since the board is intact. It is not impossible to imagine that he has already experienced such a situation before the attack last Friday. But again, it is only a hypothesis.

This attack is it a novelty in the observation of cases in New Caledonia?

It is true that the majority of attacks are detected because of the tiger sharks: this species has been formally identified in ten cases (three of those attacks were fatal) in 39 cases. At the same time, the great white is increasingly observed, and this all year. It can not therefore determine type of behavior. Still, should not return to the site of the attack for a moment, at least on a single plate. It should also be noted that this is a protected species by the Washington Convention. Last advice to surfers or users of the lagoon in general: it is useful to carry on board vessels of tourniquets. Car first aid are always more valuable.

Yesterday we learned with great sadness the death of a young Cherbourg surfer attacked by a shark at Bourail, the Mecca of surfing in New Caledonia.

There are now more details on the circumstances of his tragic death.

Yesterday morning, Hannecart Kevin, a student aged 19, and a childhood friend Bourail depart by boat from the sailing of Poe to go surfing "Secret," a renowned surfing spot which is about 20 minutes boat from the shore (about one kilometer south of Green Island, on a reef of the password).

The attack occurred at around 11:30 am.

The first attack occurred while Kevin rowed to take a wave: the shark then allegedly ripped the right arm.

His friend immediately came to the rescue but the shark would have to charge two or three times in the bite to the thigh and right calf.

Her boyfriend Kevin manages to hoist in the boat and bring him back to the mainland.

Back on the beach of Roche Percee, firefighters from the town were alerted and they try to revive Kevin arrival.

But unfortunately he had already lost too much blood ...

The victim's body should be returned to Noumea to be examined by specialists: the study of bites should identify the species of shark in question and that his attack is taille.Cette occurred in the morning, a schedule unusual.

The turtles are laying period on the beach of Roche Percee and it is possible that the shark had mistaken the surfer with a turtle. In addition, sharks are in breeding season and are quick to defend their territory.

Other risk factors for a shark attack: the heavy rains of recent days, water from the spot was not clear, even at a distance from the mouth of the Nera.

The High Commission has issued a message of caution and prevention incentive to "observe the utmost caution for the enjoyment of water activities. The end of summer coincides with the period of reproduction of sharks, the water is currently in turmoil because of recent rainfall, are warmer and désoxygénées, which intensifies the risk of encounters with sharks and floating that attack more easily in and outside the lagoon. French surfer killed in New Caledonia shark attack

From correspondents in Noumea | March 06, 2009
Article from: Agence France-Presse
A YOUNG French man has died after he was attacked by sharks while surfing in New Caledonia, police say.

The 19-year-old student's arm was ripped off and his leg bitten when he was attacked "apparently by several sharks" while trying to get back onto a boat with his friend on Friday, police said.

The man's friend managed to get him to shore, but he was dead by the time emergency workers reached him.

The incident took place in an area popular with surfers and was the first fatal shark attack in the French Pacific territory since September 2007, when a young nurse was killed.

The victim was from northwest France but was studying in the New Caledonia capital, Noumea.
