Record-breaking bite: Shark nips 44-year-old Jupiter man
As shark bites go, it wasn't much, but a 44-year-old Jupiter man on Sunday became the record-breaking 23rd bite victim of the year off the coast of Volusia County.
"This was the weakest shark bite I've ever seen in my life," said Capt. Scott Petersohn of the Volusia County Beach Patrol.
The victim, identified as David Logan, had four of five small punctures about an eighth of an inch long on his heel, Petersohn said.
Logan was surfing just south of the south jetty near New Smyrna Beach when he was bitten about 11:45 a.m.. Petersohn said. That is the place where most of the county's shark bites have occurred.
Few of the year's shark bites have been serious, although many have been treated at an area hospital even if they drove themselves there. Not Logan. After paramedics wrapped gauze on his foot. he covered the gauze in duct tape, got back on his surfboard and paddled back into the ocean.
