Shark Bites Deltona Man
Sunbather Was In Waist-Deep Water

POSTED: 3:36 am EDT September 18, 2007
UPDATED: 6:12 am EDT September 18, 2007

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Volusia County recorded its 15th shark bite of the year when a Deltona man was bitten on the side of his heel on Sunday.

Beach Patrol officers said the man was in waist-deep surf south of the Beachway approach when a small shark bit Jack Calogero, 56, of west Volusia County. Calogero was treated at the scene and went home.

Beach officials said most of the shark encounters that have happened this year in Volusia County have been where bait fish swim near the jetty. Juvenile sharks often mistake a hand or foot for food.

Man suffers minor injuries from shark bite

STAFF REPORT
NEW SMYRNA BEACH — A 56-year-old man suffered minor injuries from a shark bite, a Beach Patrol spokesman said Monday.

The Deltona man was in waist-deep water just south of the Beachway Avenue approach when a shark bit his right foot about 11:15 a.m. Sunday, said Beach Patrol spokesman Capt. Tony Sopotnick.

“He didn’t see the shark, but I heard a bystander or another beachgoer in the area had seen about a 3-foot shark in that area prior to contact with the victim,” Sopotnick said.

The man, whose name was not released, suffered some puncture wounds, but bled very little and was not seriously injured, Sopotnick said. Beach Patrol treated him at the scene and he declined EVAC ambulance transportation to a local hospital.

The bite was the fifteenth of the year reported in Volusia County.
