Two Bitten By Sharks Along Volusia County Coast

POSTED: 12:08 pm EDT August 13, 2007

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Two people in Volusia County became the season's latest shark bite victims. Both bites happened in the most common spot for bites, near the Ponce Inlet Jetty in New Smyrna Beach.

Saturday night, a shark bit a 19-year-old surfer on his left foot. Sunday night, a shark bit a 15-year-old girl.

Both bites were minor.

Counting this weekend, Volusia County has seen a total of eight bites this season.

Two shark bites reported near inlet

STAFF REPORT
NEW SMYRNA BEACH — Now there are eight; shark bites that is.

Two visitors from Central Florida were bitten over the weekend near Ponce de Leon Inlet in New Smyrna Beach, said Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman Tony Sopotnick.

The first encounter occurred about 6 p.m. Saturday when 19-year-old Apopka surfer Mathew Barton was coming ashore after wave riding.

“He was walking in about a foot of water and was bitten on the left ankle,” Sopotnick said. “He did not see the shark.”

Sopotnick said Barton flagged down a passing Beach Patrol truck and was treated at the scene before going to Bert Fish Medical Center.

The second bite occurred almost 24 hours later, at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

A 15-year-old girl from Texas, visiting family in Orlando, was playing in the shallows near the inlet when she was bitten on the right foot, Sopotnick said.

He did not identify the teenager Monday morning because of her age.

Like Barton, the girl was treated at the scene by Beach Patrol officers and then went to Bert Fish Medical Center.
