Shark Attacks Surfer Off New Smyrna Beach

Mon Jun 25, 3:30 PM ET

A surfer was bitten by a shark in Volusia County over the weekend but is OK, according to officials.

The 20-year-old man was surfing near the jetty off 29th Street and South Atlantic Avenue on Sunday at about 5 p.m. when he was bitten on the hand.

The man was not seriously injured and drove himself to the hospital.

New Smyrna Beach is the shark attack capital of the world, according to George Burgess, director of the International Shark Attack File housed at UF's Florida Museum of Natural History. The incident is the third attack of 2007, Local 6 News reported.

In 2006, 193 people were attacked by sharks in Volusia County.

June is considered an above-average month for shark attacks in the area.
