Gruesome discovery suggests shark attack

Mauled body parts found yesterday off a northern NSW beach suggest a missing beachgoer was taken by a shark.

A 45-year-old man vanished on Tuesday while swimming in heavy surf, prompting a massive search search by police, the NSW Volunteer Coastguard, Cudgen lifesavers and a Westpac lifesaver helicopter.

The human remains, which were found yesterday off Kingscliff Beach and showed evidence of a shark attack, are being investigated by police.

"It can't be confirmed that it was him until scientific analysis is conducted by police," Inspector Greg Carey of Tweed Heads police told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

"The materials may be linked to the missing person but that has to be confirmed before anything is announced."

A NSW surf lifesaving spokesman confirmed to the Daily Telegraph the body parts had been mauled.

The find is likely to spark renewed criticism that the local council is not doing enough to protect swimmers.

There have been eight drownings on the NSW far north coast over the past two years, but the Tweed Shire Council has refused increase the number of paid lifeguards on patrol.

"Obviously it is a money issue as far as patrolling beaches all year round," council spokesman Ross Cameron said recently.

Man sees tide take brother
09May07

A SWIMMER was missing last night after disappearing in a large swell off Kingscliff beach yesterday afternoon.

The 45-year-old Kingscliff man entered the water at 12.10pm on an unpatrolled stretch of Main Beach, 400m north of Cudgen Headland Surf Life Saving Club.

Tweed Byron police inspector Ross Wilkinson said the missing man's brother was on the beach and noticed the man struggling in the 2m, swell at high tide.

Mr Wilkinson said the brother hailed a person walking along the beach and used their mobile phone to call 000 at 12.15pm.

When police arrived three minutes later, the man could no longer be seen.

Police joined NSW Volunteer Coast Guard representatives, Cudgen lifesavers and a Westpac Lifesaver helicopter to search for the man.

The search will resume at dawn today.

Australian Volunteer Coast Guard northern commodore Peter Campton said he did not hold much hope of finding the missing man alive.

He said it had been high tide about noon yesterday, which had caused a 2m swell, and there had been a rip in the area.

The wave buoy off the mouth of the nearby Tweed River recorded wave heights of 3m about the time the man disappeared.

"There is a lot of weed ... and people tend to get caught up in it," he said.

Tweed duty lifesaving officer Andrew Mills also blamed the 'huge rip' and high tide for yesterday's treacherous conditions.

"Again, it is a case of not swimming between the flags. But where do you swim between the flags when the surf lifesaving season is now over?" said Mr Mills.

Volunteer lifesaving patrols finished for the season on the Anzac Day weekend.

The closest patrolled beach to Kingscliff was now '3km away as the crow flies' at Salt Surf Lifesaving Club, said Mr Mills.

Keenly watching yesterday's search unfold were Kingscliff couple Paul McCarthy and Heather Stewardson. Mr McCarthy almost drowned at the same beach in March.

He is calling upon Tweed Shire Council to fund more paid lifeguards for northern NSW beaches.

"How many people have to drown before they do something about it?" he said.
