Daytona Beach Shark Bite
A North Carolina surfer is recovering after being bitten by a shark in Daytona Beach.

Volusia County Beach Patrol lifeguards say 20-year-old Kyle Cody was walking near the Ocean Walk Band Shell in when the shark took a bite out of his foot.

This is the eleventh shark bite in Volusia County so far.

Cody was treated at the scene and walked away from the incident.

Captain Rob Horester from the Volusia County Beach Patrol said, "A marine animal might've nipped him in the foot in about shin deep water. A 20-year-old male from North Carolina around the Ocean Walk area and something nipped him in the foot. We're not sure what it was, it could've been bait fish, it could've been a shark."

Nonetheless, Beach Patrol is calling the incident a shark bite. They say swimmers need to look out for baitfish in the area. Where there is baitfish, there are sharks.

Man bitten on ankle by shark

STAFF REPORT

DAYTONA BEACH — A 20-year-old man vacationing here on his honeymoon was bit by a shark Tuesday as he waded in shallow water behind the Bandshell, a Beach Patrol spokesman said.

Kyle Cody of North Carolina was standing in shin-deep water at 11:30 a.m. when a shark swam up and nipped his left ankle, leaving a couple of puncture wounds, said Capt. Scott Petersohn, Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman. Cody’s injuries were minor, and he was treated and released by paramedics.

“The last two bites have been in very shallow water,” Petersohn said. “There are lots of baitfish and the water is not very clear.”

Baitfish attract sharks and other predatory fish into the area; the minor bites are usually cases where the shark nips the person, mistaking the surfer or swimmer’s limb for a fish, and then swims away.

This was the 11th shark bite recorded this year in Volusia County.

Volusia County Records 11th Shark Bite Of Year

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Volusia County recorded its 11th shark bite of the year on Tuesday.

A surfer from North Carolina was bit above his left ankle while he was in knee-deep water, WESH 2 News reported.

His injuries are very minor.

"I was just standing there watching little fish jump and I felt a bite," said Kyle Cody. "We jumped out of the water. I never saw the fish or anything."

He was treated by an emergency crew on the beach, and rescuers advised him to get a stitch or two at a hospital.

The fall season is baitfish season, which is what the juvenile sharks are after. Experts said they are inexperienced hunters who often mistake surfers and other swimmers for fish. Typically, the 1-foot to 4-foot-long sharks nip and immediately let go.

Beach Patrol officers said on Tuesday the ocean is like an aquarium with a lot of small fish, such as mullet and jackfish, near the shore.

None of this year's bites have left the beachgoers seriously injured.
