It was the second shark bite of the weekend. On Saturday, a child swimming in the water near the 4100 block of South Atlantic Avenue was bitten on the arm, Petersohn said. No other information was available.

Petersohn said there is no "rhyme or reason" for the recent bites other than baitfish swimming in the area and more people entering the surf during Labor Day weekend.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Sharks nibbled on two people wading into the water this weekend, bringing the total number of reported shark bites to seven in Volusia County this year.

Christopher Duncan, 33, of Orlando was standing in waist-deep water Sunday near the 700 block of North Atlantic Avenue when a 3-foot shark swam up and bit him on his right thigh, said Capt. Scott Petersohn, Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman. Duncan was treated for some puncture wounds and cuts to his thigh, and then he drove himself to Bert Fish Medical Center.

"It was a minor incident of mistaken identity,"' Petersohn said.

"There are always sharks around," he said. "It's just a fact of life."
