UPDATED: 11:50 pm EST November 20, 2005

A teen surfer was bitten on his upper right thigh by a shark Sunday as he headed to shore at New Smyrna Beach, Fla., according to Local 6 News.

Officials said the shark tore into the 17-year-old's leg in just a few feet of water at about 2:30 p.m.

The teen, who is from Winter Springs, apparently never saw the shark before or after the attack.

Lifeguards took the teen to the Beachway Avenue ramp and he was then transported to Bert Fish Medical Center. He is expected to recover from the attack.

It is the third shark attack in a month at the same beach, Local 6 News has learned.

A Winter Springs High School student considered himself lucky after he was bitten by a shark over the weekend.

Kevin Spradlin, 17, was surfing in New Smyrna Beach and was rushed to a hospital when a shark got hold of his leg, WESH 2 News reported.

Spradlin said he was paddling back to shore in knee-deep water when he felt a burning sensation on his leg. Kevin needed 43 stitches to close the laceration left by the shark bite. He said he didn't see the shark until it was too late.

Spradlin said the incident isn't going to stop him from surfing, and he plans to be back in the water in two weeks, when the doctor said it would be OK.

Surfer bitten on thigh near south jetty

STAFF REPORT

NEW SMYRNA BEACH — A surfer heading to shore Sunday afternoon was the victim of a suspected shark bite, marking the third bite in Volusia County waters in slightly more than a month.

Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said the 17-year-old Winter Springs boy, who was not identified, was coming to shore about 2:30 p.m. Sunday near the south jetty at Ponce de Leon Inlet when he was bitten on his upper right thigh.

“There were four to five minor lacerations on both sides of the leg,” he said.

The teen was transported by ambulance to Bert Fish Medical Center.

Petersohn said this is the third bite in recent weeks, bringing the total for 2005 to an estimate of 10. An 18-year-old man surfing near the south jetty was bitten on the foot Nov. 12. A 15-year-old boy was bitten on the foot Oct. 15 after stepping on a shark as he waded around the north jetty.
