A Miami man has the dubious honor of suffering Volusia County's first shark bite of the year.
Alfonso Garcia, 33, was swimming in the surf in Daytona Beach Shores at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday when he was bitten on his left foot, Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman Scott Petersohn said.

Garcia was taken by car to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach where he was treated for an "extremely minor" laceration that required stitches, Petersohn said. He was released from the hospital a short time later, hospital officials said.

Volusia County had the highest number of shark attacks in Florida last year, according to the International Shark Attack File. The three attacks in 2004 were down from the 13 reported in 2003, 18 in 2002 and 22 in 2001.

Lifeguards watching over the throng of beachgoers Saturday made no more rescues than normal, Petersohn said.

"There were very large crowds, but it's very slow," he said.

Petersohn encouraged the many visitors to the beach on this busy weekend to swim near a lifeguard.

Beachgoers should expect a moderate risk of rip currents this holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. Lifeguards advise swimmers caught in a rip to swim parallel to the shore until they become free of the current.
