Shark Bites Surfer After Drowning: Scientist
The body of a missing surfer was found with shark bites Wednesday night

A surfer who was found dead near Tourmaline Surf Park Wednesday night was apparently bitten by a shark after he drowned, according to officials.
Marine biologist Dr. Andy Nosal from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography was able to look at the photos from the body and said it appeared the victim died of drowning.
“The bites that were observed on the body when it washed ashore were inflicted postmortem,” he said.
Nosal said the body sustained heavy trauma and the bite marks were definitely from a shark, but not a large one.
“It’s probably not a great white, most likely it was a sevengill shark which is very common in the kelp forest between La Jolla Cove and Pacific Beach where this occurred,” he said.

Sevengill sharks are the largest local predators to live off the coast of San Diego and are known to eat fish, seals and other marine mammals. They can grow up to 9 feet long.
The kelp forest off the coast likely provides sevengills with a lot of food, and ...

Shark kills Reunion tourist

A French honeymooner was attacked and killed by a shark on Wednesday while he was surfing not far from the beach on the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion, authorities said.

The 36-year-old was in the sea off the popular beach of Brisants de Saint-Gilles when a shark charged at him twice, prompting a nearby swimmer to raise the alert when he saw blood on the water, the local prefecture said.

Lifeguards jumped in the water to fetch the victim, who had lost a lot of blood and was in cardiac and respiratory arrest. They brought him back to the beach but were unable to revive him.

The shark had bitten the surfer on the arm and on the thigh. His wife was on the beach when the attack happened, and is being treated for shock, authorities said.

The deadly shark attack was the first this year on the island, where three people were killed by sharks in the past two years.

Last summer, another surfer in the Reunion island was attacked by a shark that tore off his arm and leg, although he survived.

Shark bites teen at Melbourne Beach

By Tim Millard, Senior Producer

MELBOURNE BEACH --
Most people would likely not consider a shark bite "pretty cool," but Michael Adler has a positive spin on his run-in with a small shark.
The 16-year-old was surfing with friends near Sebastian, in southern Brevard County, Saturday morning. As he got off his surfboard, Adler felt something sharp on his left foot.
He said he thought it was a piece of coral or some rocks in the water. But, after five seconds, he knew it was a shark.
"I was scared it was going to come back, so I paddled straight in, as fast as I possibly could," Adler said from his bed at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.
A bystander treated the deep gashes on Adler's foot, and paramedics took him to the hospital. The surgeon who treated Adler said the teen's foot had at least 20 teeth marks.
"We knew it was a shark," said Dr. Mark Munro. "We see a lot of propeller injuries and fish hook injuries, but this is my first shark injury."
The shark's ...

A shark bites back, fisherman injured

By Craig Hoggett, The Coffs Coast Advocate,
04. May 2013

A WOBBEGONG shark got a slice of revenge on fisherman Ted Collins at Emerald Beach this week.

Mr Collins was fishing for mulloway off the beach on Sunday evening when something big took his line.

The 78-year-old keen angler reeled the creature in and was surprised to find a wobbegong shark on his line.

Not knowing the big fish was protected, he went back to his home to get help transporting it.

He said his wife talked him out of taking it home and in the process of returning it to water the shark sunk its teeth into his foot.

Mr Collins said the shark was about two metres long and extremely heavy.

“After a bit of discussion I put him back in the water and tried to revive him – I though he might have been dead,” he said.

“I put him in the second line of waves and then fell over, that’s when he decided to bite me.”

Mr Collins didn’t discover the extent of the injury until he went home and it wouldn’t stop bleeding ...

Shark Attacks Man In Knee Deep Water On Beach

The fisherman is being treated in hospital after being bitten on both legs as he was removing another shark from a net.

A man has been attacked by a shark while fishing on a beach in waters that were only knee deep.

Alan Saunders was bitten on both legs by the Grey Nurse Shark off the coast of New South Wales in Australia.

He reportedly suffered deep puncture wounds in the attack in the town of Crowdy Head.

His brother said he was bitten as he was releasing one of three sharks caught in a fishing net.

Ray Saunders said: "Alan was involved in removing one of the sharks out of the wings of the net.

"He released that shark but another shark came in and bit him on both legs."

The 51-year-old is being treated in hospital in the city of Newcastle after being taken there by air ambulance.

Boy recovering after suspected shark bite in water near Delray

It was supposed to be just another Florida family vacation for the Cicarellis.

Mike Cicarelli brought his family from Roxbury, Conn., to visit his parents, but after 20 minutes in the water near Delray Beach on Wednesday, Mike Cicarelli and his wife, Tanya, heard a scream at about 10:30 a.m.

Something, authorities suspect a small shark, had just bitten their 9-year-old son Colten's foot.

"It's something that a mother knows. You hear a certain cry and you know it's something more than just a bumped toe," Tanya Cicarelli said at a news conference at Delray Medical Center on Thursday.

Mike Cicarelli plucked Colten from the water, but it wasn't until a lifeguard rolled Colten over that the parents saw the bite.

At first, the parents thought Colten stepped on something. But Colten later described seeing a bluish-gray fish, about 3 feet long, with three fins in the water.

"We were very scared," said Mike Cicarelli.

Plastic Surgeon Dr. Anthony Dardano was on call when Colten came in to the hospital. He said the injury was hard to treat, not only because of the risk ...

Cape Town - A Swiss tourist was bitten by a blue shark on Sunday during a free dive organised by one of False Bay’s main shark dive operators.

Tourist ‘scratched’ by shark

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said the man sustained a “light scratch” and drove himself to hospital for treatment. The NSRI had responded to a call, but upon arrival paramedics noted that bleeding from the cut had stopped.

Yesterday Stephen Swanson, co-owner of Shark Explorers, which organised the dive, said the incident had been “blown out of proportion” because of miscommunication.

“The incident was not remarkable. We merely alerted the NSRI as a matter of protocol. Because we deal with foreign tourists, we have to maintain professional conduct and take all possible precautions. The fact is that free diving is an adventure sport, and all adventure sports carry with them a small element of risk.”

Swanson declined to divulge the identity of the man without his consent, and said he was already on his way to his next ...

Surfer suffers first shark bite of the year off New Smyrna

DeBary surfer suffers first shark bite of the year

A 21-year-old surfer from DeBary suffered the first shark bite of the season, Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris said Sunday.

The surfer, whose name was not available, was bitten about 1:30 p.m. Saturday as he caught waves off New Smyrna Beach near the south jetty, Marris said.

"He suffered a minor laceration to the hand," she said. "I think this is our first shark bite of the year."

Volusia and Brevard counties shared the dubious distinction for most shark bites in 2012 with eight apiece, according to George Burgess, director of the International Shark Attack File at the University of Florida.

The bites off Volusia beaches are usually minor, and usually happen to surfers near Ponce de Inlet, Marris said in February when the 2012 results were released.

"That's where there are a lot of baitfish and a lot of surfers."

04/13/2013 - Nae Dok Kim - Guam - *** Fatal ***

HAGATNA, Guam — A Korean tourist who went missing while visiting Guam was attacked by a shark before he drowned, according to findings from an autopsy.

Authorities identified the man as Nae Dok Kim, 40, Pacific Daily News reported Monday.

He was last seen on the beach Saturday. Employees of Pacific Islands Club Guam had helped in the search, and lifeguards were asked to look out for any sight of him.

Two fishermen found his remains floating the next day about 20 feet offshore in Tumon Bay.

Both of his legs and his right arm were missing, said Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola. The autopsy showed evidence of bleeding, an indication that his heart was still beating when the attack happened.

"He also drowned, but before he drowned, he was attacked," Espinola said.

"Our prayers go out to the family," said Karl Pangelinan, general manager of the Guam Visitor's Bureau.

While shark attacks are not common for Guam, the tourist was likely attacked while swimming over the edge of the reef, where there are larger sharks, said Terry Donaldson, a professor at University of Guam's marine laboratory. Sharks ...

04/04/2013 Male - Florida

JENSEN BEACH – A shark bit the hand of 50-year-old man, causing a minor injury.

Lifeguards responded at 1:05 p.m. Thursday to a swimmer they perceived as in distress toward the south end of the beach, and when they helped him to shore they learned a shark had bit his hand, Martin County Fire Rescue officials said.

The man was taken to Martin Memorial Medical Center.

No other information was available Sunday.

This is the seventh reported shark bite on Treasure Coast beaches since January 2012. Five have occurred in Martin County and one in Indian River County.

Florida recorded 26 shark bites in 2012, almost half of the nation’s 53 last year, the most the country has had in one year since 2000, according to a recent University of Florida study.
