Joey Nocchi of Paso Robles and his two buddies launched their kayaks from Leffingwell Landing in Cambria, Saturday, and paddled north. After a successful fishing trip, they were making their way back to shore... when it happened.

"I was taking just nice fluid strokes just cruising along and I got hit from the bottom and it sounded like somebody hit my kayak with a base ball bat," he said.

That bat turned out to be a 15-foot great white shark. It's powerful jaws and teeth sunk deep into his vessel... pushing Joey five feet into the air, and then into the water.

"I had my life vest on and it came across me, and I didn't want to touch it. I had my hands back but his tail came across me and I felt his skin on my hands and it was a pretty crazy, eery feeling," Joey said.

The shark ...

A TWENTY-year-old Yanuca villager survived a shark attack off an island near Taveuni yesterday.

Tevita Naborisi was spearfishing at Matacucu Reef when he was attacked.

According to his cousin, William Bukarau, Mr Naborisi went spearfishing with a group but strayed from the rest of his group. He was attacked twice by the shark.

"He had speared a donu when the shark attacked him from his right side," said Mr Bukarau.

"The shark bit his head but he managed to fend the shark away.

"The shark had bitten into the right side of Tevita's temple in the first attack. The shark came around a second time but Tevita managed to push the shark away," said Mr Bukarau.

Mr Naborisi then swam to the nearest man from his party who was spearfishing 50 metres away where they called the boat which was another 50 metres away.

He is now recovering at the Waiyevo Hospital in Taveuni.

German tourist attacked by shark off Vero Beach in serious condition after surgery

VERO BEACH, Fla. — A swimmer visiting from Germany was bitten by a shark late Wednesday morning north of Humiston Park, according to fire rescue officials.

Karin Ulrike Stei, 47, of Konstanz, Germany, was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, authorities said.

The shark bite took a large section of Stei’s upper left thigh down to the bone, according to lifeguard Erik Toomsoo, who brought the woman in to shore.

She was out of surgery as of 7 p.m. and listed in serious condition, according to Ginger King, hospital spokeswoman, Wednesday night.

According to police, Karin Stei and friend Brigitte Schmid were swimming in waist-deep water when the incident occurred. Stei was approximately 30 yards from the shore and Schmid was approximately 20 to 25 yards from the shore when Stei was bitten.

Schmid told investigators she was not aware that Stei was in danger until she heard her yell “Shark.” She turned to look at her friend and saw blood in the water near her. There were no other witnesses to the incident. ...

Shark bites girl's paddleboard off Catalina Island

The Associated Press,
May. 06, 2012

AVALON, Calif. -- Authorities say a 15-year-old paddleboarder survived an encounter with a shark which bit her board several times off the coast of Catalina Island.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said the girl was with a group of paddle boarders about 200 yards from shore when she encountered the shark Sunday morning.

The teenager was not injured, but her board was bitten several times.

The encounter prompted lifeguards to issue warnings to swimmers, divers and boaters around the island. They have been patrolling the waters but have not seen the shark so far.

Shark Attack In Melbourne, Florida

MELBOURNE, Florida - A 28 year-old Melbourne Beach resident was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in stable condition this evening after suffering an apparent shark bite while surfing off of Florida's Space Coast.

The unidentified man told rescuers that he was about 50 feet from the shoreline when the bite occurred. As he paddled out, he reportedly felt something grab his hand as it entered the water and, after pulling his hand free, saw what he described as an approximately 5-foot-long unidentified shark swimming away.

After returning to shore, the Brevard County surfer and a friend attempted to drive to the hospital in a private vehicle before pulling over near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and South Miramar Avenue in Indialantic, Florida and calling 9-1-1.

He was treated for injuries consistent with a bite at the scene by paramedics from Indialantic Fire Department and Brevard County Fire Rescue before being transported via ambulance for further medical evaluation.

The incident was reported at 7:28 p.m. Thursday evening.

According to the International Shark Attack File maintained by the Florida Museum of Natural History, Brevard County has had 101 attacks from ...

Shark kills man in S.Africa

A man was killed by a shark while body boarding at a bay in Cape Town on Thursday in South Africa's second deadly mauling this year.

"According to eye witnesses, they saw a man being bitten by a shark," said National Sea Rescue Institute spokesman Craig Lambinon, adding that emergency services and the NSRI had arrived on scene.

"They can confirm we have found a body of a man on rocks in a barely accessible area," he told AFP.

"Efforts are underway at present to recover that body and once the body has been recovered we can determine exactly what it is that has happened."

City officials confirmed the fatal attack at Kogel Bay Resort which is near Gordon's Bay, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the city centre, in the eastern stretch of the large False Bay.

"A body boarder was fatally attacked and sadly passed away," said Gregg Oelofse, head of environmental policy and strategy

Officials in the top tourist city are mulling a trial shark net for top swimming beach Fish Hoek where three attacks, two deadly, have taken place.

TEENAGE adventurer Elise Lavers has been hailed as a hero and her friend Michael Demasi one of the luckiest men alive.

The pair survived a kayaking clash with a 6m great white shark off the Yorke Peninsula.

The drama in Dolphin Bay, in Innes National Park, unfolded late on Wednesday when the friends went kayaking, unaware the calm bay was a known haunt for large sharks.

Mr Demasi, 27, has a small wound on his thigh where the shark pierced his plastic kayak when it bit into it in 40m-deep water.

The Flinders University student thought he had been washed on to rocks by a wave and bailed out of his kayak, only to turn around and see the huge shark treating his boat like a chew toy.

"The shark bit into my thigh and was violently jerking the kayak," he said.

"I didn't know it was a shark so I was relaxed enough to grab my sunnies as I bailed out.

"It wasn't until I came up from the water when I saw a big thing gnawing ...

Diver killed by shark off Busselton in Western Australia

A MAN killed by a shark off Western Australia's southwest coast was diving with his brother, police say.

The man was diving about 200m off Stratham Beach in Geographe Bay about 230km southwest of Perth, when he was attacked just before 9.30am (WST) today.

A police spokeswoman said it was believed the man was diving with his brother, who was not harmed.

The body has been taken south to Port Geographe Marina in Busselton.

Beaches in the area have been closed following the attack.

Experts from the Department of Fisheries have launched an investigation, which will include an examination of bite marks on the man's body to determine what species of shark was involved in the attack.

An aerial patrol was to be sent out to try to determine if the shark was still in the area.

Today's attack is the fourth fatal shark attack off the WA coast since September last year.

A shark nipped a surfer's foot this afternoon in about 4 feet of water near the south jetty, marking the year's third reported shark bite

Shark bites surfer off New Smyrna Beach

By ANDREW GANT, STAFF WRITER

 March 24, 2012 2:40 PM

A shark nipped a surfer's foot this afternoon in about 4 feet of water near the south jetty, marking the year's third reported shark bite.

Joey Coppola, 21, had minor lacerations and declined medical treatment after the bite, which happened just after 2 p.m., Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris said.

Marris said it wasn't clear what type of shark bit Coppola.

The first two reported bites of the year happened earlier this month -- also near the jetty in New Smyrna Beach, where two teen surfers were bitten within about 5 minutes of each other.
