08/04/2012 - Téophane Tauiratea - FRENCH POLYNESIA

We are still looking for information on this incident and the 40 or so other incidents from the French Polynesia area that have gone un-reported.
25 of them were the result of shark feeding divers so we will probably never get all the info.

Tuamotu. If this is the first attack in a dive, this is not the first time a lemon shark attacks a human
being in Polynesia. August 4, Téophane, spearfishing, was severely bitten in the shoulder by a
shark, lemon, Kaukura, the Tuamotus. That day, after speared two fish in muddy water, he saw a
gray shark that revolves around him. Téophane shoots an arrow in his direction to scare them away.
But while he is busy rearming his gun, he is surprised by a huge lemon shark with a length of 2.5 to
3 meters. Bitten on the shoulder, the fisherman loses his mask and a palm. He finds it difficult to
return to the boat, swimming with his one good arm. Fortunately, the shark is not returned to the
charge.
Generally not aggressive, the size of a lemon shark (two to three meters) makes it potentially
dangerous to humans. Shark attacks are rare in Polynesia, and if there are, they are not necessarily
reported to the press. However, no attack was dead today.

Shark grabs diver by the head

12-00-2012-jenny-oliver.jpg

A university student bitten on the head by a shark while diving in Fiordland only escaped its clutches when her dive partner punched it in the nose.

Jenny Oliver, 25, was part of a diving team helping remove a pest weed from Sunday Cove last month, when a seven-gill shark approached her.

The shark swooped over Oliver, making several attempts to bite her oxygen supply, before taking her head in its jaws.

Department of Conservation marine ranger Richard Kinsey, who was diving with Oliver, captured the frightening episode on his video camera.

Oliver said she was "more surprised than scared" when the shark first bit her regulator.

" felt that staying calm and letting him figure out that my dive gear wasn't food would be better than aggravating him," she said.

However, the shark would not leave Oliver alone. It gave up biting her regulator, only to start biting her head and she became trapped in its jaws.

Luckily, she was wearing a thick hood.

Oliver's dive buddy acted quickly, punching the shark in the nose.

"Clearly I was nervous when the shark was shaking the top of my head in its jaw, but it was all over so fast there was barely time for me to react," she said.

Oliver was an experienced diver, having completed close to 400 dives, and said she knew panic would not "solve many stressful situations encountered underwater".

Kinsey had been diving for 17 years and said sharks were often spotted in Fiordland.

"It's not uncommon to encounter one. I've come across them before but never had any issues like this.

"They are potentially aggressive but they're not as big as some other sharks and they usually leave people alone.

"It did get a little bit interesting . . . She was quite lucky".

Environment Southland, the Ministry for Primary Industries and DOC are working together to eliminate the Asian seaweed, undaria, from Sunday Cove.

Oliver, who is completing a masters degree in marine biology at Victoria University, said the experience had not put her off diving in Fiordland.

"I'm looking forward to the next trip. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to dive and spend time in such a special place".

No swimming allowed on portion of Jensen Beach Public Beach after swimmer bitten by shark

No swimming is being allowed at the life guarded portion of Jensen Beach Public Beach Monday afternoon after a swimmer was bitten by a shark.

Lifeguards were flying the double red flags, meaning no swimming. A swimmer was bitten on the lower leg or ankle area by a shark, officials said. The bite was minor and not life threatening, officials said.

Previous reports of shark bites in the Treasure Coast area were in May and September.

On May 9, a woman from Germany was bitten in the thigh, while in waist deep water north of Humiston Park, according to fire rescue officials.

Karin Ulrike Stei, 47, of Konstanz, Germany, had surgery to repair a section of her upper thigh, which had been bitten to the bone, lifeguards said.

According to police, Karin Stei and friend Brigitte Schmid were swimming in waist-deep water when the incident occurred. Stei was approximately 30 yards from the shore and Schmid was approximately 20 to 25 yards from the shore when Stei was bitten.

On June 26, near Jupiter, 6-year-old Nickolaus Bieber was bitten in the thigh by a shark. The bite happened just north of the Juno Beach Pier near the Marcinski Park area, Jupiter Police Department spokesperson Scott Pascarella said.

Pascarella said the boy was at the beach with his father. Hospital officials believe the bite came from a bull shark.

On Sept. 25, Brandon Murray, 22, was surfing off Spanish House point, north of Sebastian Inlet State Park. As he was about to take his last wave into shore, a 4-foot shark came out of the water with its mouth wide open. "Right when I turned around the shark just jumped out of the water and spun and just grabbed my foot," said Murray.

The shark's teeth caught Murray's left foot. His 'pinky' toe was left hanging on by a thread. "Looks like razor blades from the bottom and in between my toes and all out," he said.

On Sept. 26, also north of the inlet park, Brandon Taylor never saw a shark; he only felt it clamping down on his left arm.

"Out of no where, just under my board, just a lot of pressure," he said. "It was immediate. I know exactly what happened. I felt the pain," said Taylor.

Shark bites surfboard as Kauai beach closes, too

KEKAHA, Kauai (HawaiiNewsNow) -

In what turned out to be a dangerous day in Hawaiian waters, Davidson's Surf Break on Kauai joined Maui's Waiehu Beach Park on the list of state beaches closed by shark-related incidents on Sunday after a surfer's board was bitten while he sat waiting for a wave.

A Department of Land and Natural Resources spokesperson says the surfer, a male whose age is currently unknown, was surfing with between 8 and 10 other people at around 8:15 a.m. when the incident occurred.

The man was sitting atop his board when the shark, which was between 8-10 feet long and may have been a tiger shark, came up from under the surfer and bit the tail end of the board, then released it.

The group paddled in shortly after the incident. The man was not injured.

DLNR officials closed the beach for the day and will wait until Monday before deciding whether to re-open it to the public.

12/19/2012 - Rich Wands - Australia - No Injury

Surfer uses board to fight off shark

A surfer has described how he fought off a 2m shark when a feeding frenzy involving up to 16 sharks erupted at South Trigg beach yesterday.

Rich Wands, 33, of Cottesloe, said he was surfing 30m offshore about 8.30am when the shark started to circle him and swam beneath his board.

"I was basically trying to follow it as it circled me, then it came round and it rammed me," he said.

The drilling engineer picked up his board and used it to smash the shark's face again and again, until it swam away, but it came around and went for him again.

"It was going to happen, this was a final attack," he said. "I had to do something or I was going to lose an arm or a leg."

He hit the shark again, then yelled to alert others in the water and paddled furiously to shore. Only when he reached the sand did he realise he had been in the middle of a feeding frenzy.

He ran about 300m and alerted a surf lifesaving officer, who sounded the alarm and shut Trigg and Scarborough beaches, which remained closed until about 4pm.

About 10 other surfers were with Mr Wands and children were playing in the shallows and all paddled in when the alarm sounded.

Brody Martin, 12, was knee-deep in water when he saw a metre-long shark about 10 metres away.

"I felt excited. I've never seen a shark before," he said.

He walked back to shore after his mother's friend screamed at him to get out of the water.

Hundreds of people watched as Tiger sharks swarmed only 20 to 30m off shore, feasting on a dolphin carcass for about four hours.

The stranded dolphin washed up near the water's edge about 5.30am. Department of Fisheries regional manager Tony Cappelluti said while feeding in this way was not unusual for this species, it was rare they swarmed in a crowded metropolitan area.

He said the department had no plans to hunt the sharks because the beaches had been cleared successfully and no one was at risk.

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said the authority to kill a shark lay with the director-general of the Department of Fisheries and could only happen if a shark posed an "imminent threat" to humans.

City of Stirling beach services coordinator John Snook said yesterday's incident was extremely unusual.
"Where the sharks are would probably be not more than 2 to 2.5m deep and having them this close to the shore . . . is pretty unusual," he said.

12/30/2012 - Danny Sheather - Australia - No Injury

Sydney surfer tells of being 'knocked off board by shark'

Authorities have closed two beaches in Sydney’s north after a shark tried to attack a surfer and took a bite of his surfboard.

Long Reef and Dee Why beaches have been closed after a 2.5-metre shark reportedly knocked into an off-duty lifeguard’s long board while he was in the water this afternoon.

There are no reports of injuries.

Lifeguards closed the beaches after spotting what they believe was a shark.

Danny Sheather, 23, told Nine News he was on top of a wave surfing with his mates when his board was struck from below.

"I felt a big hit from under me and then it kind of knocked me off my feet," the Warringah Council lifeguard said.

A 15cm gash in a surfboard believed to have been made by a shark.

Mr Sheather said when he reached the beach he noticed a "decent gash" on the bottom of his surfboard.

"I showed my mate who's a life guard and he's like 'yeah, it's a shark for sure'," Mr Sheather said.

He said he was left shocked by the incident - his only suspected brush with a shark in 18 years of surfing.

Lifeguards scoured the water in rubber duckies after the incident and the Westpac rescue helicopter arrived an hour later to scan the area from above.

The Westpac helicopter reports the shark has continued to 'surf' behind the waves along the stretch of beach and authorities were trying to move it away.

A lifesaver who did not give his name told the Daily Telegraph that although Mr Sheather did not see the shark the encounter was being taken seriously.

Danny Sheather talks to a lifeguard.

"It's an unusual gash in the board and there' no obvious debris in the water to explain him hitting a bit of wood or something," he said.

12/25/2012 - Liya Sibili - South Africa *** Fatal ***

7 killed by sharks in 7 years

CHRISTMAS Day festivities turned to terror at Port St Johns’s “beach of death” when 20-year-old
Liya Sibili, of Gauteng, was attacked and killed by a shark while swimming at the notorious
Second Beach.

Billed as the most dangerous beach in the world after seven fatal attacks in as many years,
swimmers were however back in the water within hours of the deadly attack – while rescuers still
searched for Sibili’s body.

A popular Christmas stomping ground for thousands of people, news of the attack and subsequent
swimming ban did not stop crowds from swarming into the tiny valley and beach to party it up –
often with a beer in one hand and braai tongs in the other – and cool off in the warm Indian
Ocean.

Several residents yesterday confirmed people were swimming well into the evening the day after
the attack, much to the concern of stretched lifeguards who worked until 8pm to try and ensure
their safety.

Talented Border surfer Avuyile Ndamase – who relocated to East London soon after watching
helplessly as his younger brother Zama was mauled to death by a shark in the bay last year –
yesterday recalled how he was playing volleyball on the crowded beach when he spotted the
shark swim between bathers. “People were trying to get out the water after the lifeguards spotted
something in the water. I saw the tail of something really big grab the boy, the water started boiling
and later it went red.”

Ndamase said after years of riding the waves in the tiny bay he had stopped swimming and
surfing there after the attack on his brother Zama. “After all the attacks we have had here over the
years, people are crazy to even go in the water.”

Second Beach lodge owner Mike Gatke – who started the acclaimed Ilitha surfing academy, but
closed it in 2009 after a spate of attacks – yesterday said under-equipped lifeguards were
extremely nervous to go into the water after witnessing the latest attack. “They are very scared.
There is no way they will go into the water if someone is attacked.”

Family spokesman and uncle warrant officer Sipho Mditshwa said Sibili’s mother, brother Andile
and other family members have received counselling. “She (mom) is coping better now. She has
been getting counselling from social workers,” Mditshwa said. Mditshwa said so far only a piece of
clothing had been recovered.

The search for Sibili’s body was called off yesterday

Mates save NSW surfer mauled by shark

A SURFER'S life has been saved by his mates' quick thinking after he was mauled by a shark on the NSW mid-north coast.

The 29-year-old, named Luke, was attacked near remote Diamond Head, south of Port Macquarie, on Friday morning by what is believed to be a bull shark.

He was bitten on the leg about 10.45am (AEDT) and then on the hand as he tried to push the shark away, Surf Life Saving said.

Paramedic Ian Spencer said the surfer had been bitten on his thigh and groin and had also "lost a couple of fingers on his left hand".

Luke's mates used the leg ropes on their surfboards as tourniquets to stem the bleeding, the Nine Network reported.

"They absolutely saved this guy's life," Mr Spencer told Nine.

Luke was still conscious when he was airlifted to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition and his injuries are not life-threatening.

His family thanked those who helped him out of the water.

"The family express their gratitude to all those who assisted at the beach, as well as the emergency personnel who gave such rapid assistance," they said in a statement.

Luke, from the NSW central coast, had been camping with family and friends, according to local Fairfax Media.

He was surfing when a pod of dolphins came through the waves, according to the Fairfax report, and he was attacked about 10 minutes later.

Adam Eady, from Crowdy Head Surf Life Saving Club, south of the attack site, said beaches from Crowdy Head north to Camden Haven had closed as a precaution and could remain closed for up to 24 hours.

The stretch of coastline where the surfer was attacked was unpatrolled and shark sightings in the area were rare, he said.

"At this time of year, it really is unusual for sharks to be around this close in," he said.

Surf Life Saving's state lifesaving manager, Dean Storey, said holiday-makers concerned about sharks should swim at patrolled beaches.

"That way lifesavers and lifeguards can clear the water in the event of a shark sighting and first aid support and equipment is immediately available," Mr Storey said.

A co-owner of the Diamond Beach Holiday Park said she had lived in the area for 10 years and never heard of a similar incident.

"There's been sightings of sharks but no attacks that we're aware of," Donna King told AAP.

Friday's attack follows an incident on the mid-north coast three weeks ago in which a diver suffered minor puncture wounds after a suspected grey nurse shark attack at South West Rocks, about 110 kilometres north of Diamond Head.
