&#x3C;b&#x3E;12/06/2009 Aquarium Diver ( New Jersey )&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

A volunteer diver was bitten on the ankle by a sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus) at the
Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey.

Just when you thought it was safe to go to the aquarium...

Shark attacks are rare in the waters off New Jersey. They are virtually unheard of in the confines of an aquarium, however. At least that was the case until last December, when officials confirmed, that a volunteer diver was bitten on the ankle by a sand-tiger shark at Adventure Aquarium in Camden.

&#x26;quot;This was an accident; the uncertainty of animal behavior is always a risk,&#x26;quot; Greg Charbeneau, Adventure Aquarium's executive director, said in a statement published in the Philadelphia Daily News.

Earlier this week, reports did confirm that diver with the New Jersey Academy of Aquatic Sciences did sustain an injury upon entering the Shark Realm exhibit at the aquarium on Dec. 6. First aid was administered at the scene to the unidentified volunteer, who was later treated at Cooper University Hospital. Charbeneau said the diver has recovered and is back at the aquarium.
According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), the scary-looking sand-tiger shark is popular in aquariums. Despite its ominous appearance and sharp, ragged teeth, the creature is fairly harmless, officials said.

The incident was the first between shark and man in the aquarium's 18 years.

George Burgess, director of the ISAF, said he would define the Camden incident as more of a &#x26;quot;workplace incident&#x26;quot; than a shark attack.

&#x26;quot;It's not a big deal for us, because they are not unprovoked shark attacks. That's what we look for,&#x26;quot; Burgess said. &#x26;quot;Shark bites are a story, though. We know that.&#x26;quot;

Sand tiger sharks, which can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh several hundred pounds, are found on the Atlantic coast as well as in South America and Australia, Burgess said. The ISAF has documented only 29 attacks by the species, two of which were fatal.

In 1916, there was a series of shark attacks in the Atlantic waters between Matawan and Beach Haven that left four people dead and became the inspiration for Peter Benchley's &#x26;quot;Jaws.&#x26;quot;

There has been at least one more fatal attack in the Garden State since then.

In 2010 we just learned of the third world country of Vietnam having problems of people being attacked by after three people were bitten on the same day and 10 people bitten in six months time. This is not one of 10 people bitten.

As we learn more about Vietnam shark attacks they will be updated.

&#x3C;b&#x3E;07/29/2009 Hoang Thi Thuy Hong   ( Vietnam )&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

As we begin to learn about shark attacks in third world countries it gets hard and takes awhile to gather information. In a recently reported attack where three people were attacked in the same day in Vietnam &#x3C;a class="postlink-local" href="http://sharkattacksurvivors.com/shark_attack/viewtopic.php?f=45&#x26;amp;t=1335"&#x3E;viewtopic.php?f=45&#x26;amp;t=1335&#x3C;/a&#x3E; we learned about additional attacks that have taken place in a six month time in 2009 at the same beach.

Hoang Thi Thuy Hong is one of the additional shark attack survivors attacked in this area.

On July 29, 2009 Hoang Thi Thuy Hong a forty one year old female was swimming at 5:30 PM when a shark bit her foot at Quy Nhon - Binh Dinh Province - Vietnam.

&#x3C;b&#x3E;07/19/2009 - 12/31/2009 Six People Bitten ( Vietnam )&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

Suspected shark attacks three in central Vietnam

An unidentified fish suspected to be a shark on Saturday attacked three people in the central coastal province of Binh Dinh.

Nguyen Minh Tuan, lecturer at the Quy Nhon University, was bathing 100 meters off Quy Nhon Town at around 6.45 a.m. when a fish bit his left arm two times before swimming away.

A man fishing nearby came to rescue Tuan, who later had to undergo a two-hour surgery at the local Army Medical Hospital No.13.

Tuan said the fish had grey and rough skin, and looked like it weighed 20-30 kilograms.

Mang Duc Hanh, another staff member of the university, meanwhile, was attacked at around 5 p.m. the same day when he was bathing in the same area off Quy Nhon Town.

Hanh was also bitten twice on his right wrist, damaging arteries and nerves. He was transferred to the Ho Chi Minh City-based Cho Ray Hospital from the local Binh Dinh General Hospital on Monday morning due to critical nature of his injuries.

&#8220;The fish&#8217;s skin was a bit smooth and weighed around 35-40 kilograms. I&#8217;m absolutely sure it was a shark,&#8221; Hanh told Thanh Nien.

The fish was also reported to attack a local woman, causing minor injuries to her.

&#x3C;span style="font-weight: bold"&#x3E;Since last July around ten people have fallen victim to the fish at Quy Nhon beach.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;

Thai Ngoc Bich, chairman of Quy Nhon town&#8217;s People&#8217;s Committee, said the fish was likely to be a shark, stressing that they would take actions, including offering a reward to those who could catch it.

&#x3C;b&#x3E;07/18/2009 Nguyen Quang Vinh ( Vietnam )&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

Previously, Nguyen Quang Vinh, 56, was also attacked by a fish on July 18th , 2009, while swimming off Quy Nhon.

On January 12, 2010 we learned of this incident and six additional bites in 2009 when 3 swimmers were bitten on the same day in 2010. We are trying to figure out the species of shark &#x26;quot;&#x26;quot;&#x26;quot; &#8220;nham&#8221; fish, a kind of shark, &#x26;quot;&#x26;quot;&#x26;quot;&#x26;quot;

Nguyen Minh Tuan, a teacher from Quy Nhon University, bitten by fish while swimming in the sea, was rushed to hospital, in emergency, on Jan 9th.

People at the scene said that fish had also attacked another woman but her injury was less serious since she got to shore in time.

&#x3C;span style="font-weight: bold"&#x3E;Previously, Nguyen Quang Vinh, 56, was also attacked by a fish on July 18th , 2009, while swimming off Quy Nhon. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;

Local fishermen say that they sometimes catch &#8220;nham&#8221; fish, a kind of shark, weighing around 10-15kg each, and this was probably the source of the attack.

			<title>12/18/2009 Lance Morris ( South Africa ) possible Barracuda</title>

&#x3C;b&#x3E;12/18/2009 Lance Morris ( South Africa ) possible Barracuda&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

At Approximately 2:30pm Durban Surfer Lance Morris was attacked by either a small shark or some other form of predator fish like a Barracuda or Morey eel at North Beach. He had to have 10 stitches to repair the damage. By the size of the bite marks on his leg, Dr Mckune who was the surgeon who stitched him up estimated the attacker to be about 1-1/2m in length.

&#x3C;div class="inline-attachment"&#x3E;lance-morris.jpg&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class="inline-attachment"&#x3E;lance-morris2.jpg&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div class="inline-attachment"&#x3E;lance-morris3.jpg&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

TheBOMBsurf caught up with a remarkably calm Lance as he was being sown up. While he couldn&#8217;t positively identify what the species of fish was that attacked him he was surprised at it&#8217;s aggression.

&#8220;I&#8217;d just finished a wave in the right bowl and was close inshore near the bathing area when I felt something clamp down on my leg. At first I thought it was one of my mates playing a joke on me but then I realised I was being attacked. I tried to shake it off but it clamped down harder. Eventually I got it off and and quickly got out of the water. There was a bodyboarder right next to me who was just in shock. I dunno for sure what it was but it gave me a hell of a fright!&#8221;

TheBOMBsurf mailed an image of the bite to Mark Addison from Blue Wilderness Safaris for comment on what might have caused it. Mark&#8217;s response was &#8220;the bite is NOT consistent with that of a shark, but in all likelihood was caused my a Sea Pike or Barracuda&#8221;.

Alan Connell one of SA&#8217;s leading ichthyologists (fish scientists) concurred with Mark&#8217;s opinion based on the photographic evidence.

Charl Tostee from The Surf HQ in Brickhill Road remembers a similar incident at Dairy Beach about ten years ago. &#8220;This guy got bitten and everyone thought it was a shark when in fact it turned out to be a Barracuda&#8221;.

There has been an unusually high amount of rainfall in KZN this Summer with rivers flowing fuller than usual. This translates into reduced visibility for all predators. Surfers are advised to proceed with care when choosing where and when to surf. Top of the list to avoid would be swollen river mouths on the coast at dawn or dusk. This incident also indicates that even the town beaches are not immune when the water gets dirty. Ends.

Tiger shark menaces paddlers
22nd December 2009

LARGE, aggressive tiger shark menaced two kayakers as they paddled across a popular Sunshine Coast surfing and swimming spot.

The shark, believed to be 2.4 metres long, continually bumped the men&#8217;s double kayak as they paddled to shore from Mudjimba Island about 11am Sunday.

Lifesaver cleared the water while two wave runners and the Mudjimba surf club&#8217;s IRB were sent out to find the animal.

There was no sign of it but youngsters who had been out on bodyboards were brought back to the beach on wave runners while several surfers took refuge on the island.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine Coast duty officer Dave McLean said the kayakers&#8217; report appeared to legitimate.

The men had been fishing and there were suggestions the shark may have been attracted to the kayak by a fish sitting in the bottom of the vessel.

&#8220;The beach was closed for about 35 minutes,&#8221; Mr McLean said.

&#8220;People were removed from the water until the all-clear was given.&#8221;

Reports of a shark attack at Alexandria Bay about 4.30pm Sunday sent emergency services into action but it turned out a 27-year-old surfer had cut herself on her own board.

Further north, a spear fisherman was attacked by a bull shark off Heron Island.

John Pengelly, 18, from Gladstone, was bitten on his forearm by a three-metre shark after he caught a fish with two friends on Lamont Reef on Sunday.

He said he only caught a glimpse as the shark struck before his friends moved into action to stem the bleeding from the 20cm wound.

Mr Pengelly was taken to Heron Island by friends before being flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women&#8217;s Hospital for surgery and a blood transfusion.

The Sunshine Coast shoreline is protected by 11 shark nets and 78 drumlines.

A total of 79 sharks &#8211; mostly tiger and bull sharks &#8211; were caught in 2008 &#8211; 25 more than the previous year.

Port Alfred - A KwaZulu-Natal resident was upbeat on Wednesday and and determined to continue his holiday after being bitten on the foot by a shark at Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday morning.

Simon Bruce, 20, told The Witness he is &#8220;fine&#8221;, although his foot is swollen and sore.

He feels very lucky that his injuries are not more severe.

He sustained five bites in his left foot, three of which are &#8220;quite big and deep&#8221; and required stitches.

'I freaked'

&#8220;I was walking out into the sea at about 08:30. The water was a little bit murky, but it was really flat. I was walking on a sandbank and I was no more than chest deep when I felt a bump on my foot. I didn&#8217;t feel the bite at all.

&#8220;Then I felt the shark rub against the top of my legs and I freaked. I assumed straightaway it was a shark.&#8221;

He said he did not see the shark at all and immediately headed back to the beach.

While he was wading back to shore his foot started to &#8220;feel funny&#8221; and he realised he had been bitten.

His wounds bled quite badly.

Two friends on the beach wrapped his foot in a towel and took him to hospital.

He received an anti-tetanus injection, the bite wounds were disinfected and stitched, and his foot was bandaged.

Disbelief

Bruce said the reaction of most people to news of the attack was disbelief. &#8220;They think I&#8217;m playing the fool,&#8221; he said.

He plans to continue his journey to Coffee Bay to spend the New Year with his friends.

His father, Richmond dairy farmer Div Bruce, said the family is extremely thankful that his son&#8217;s injuries are not more serious.

It was a shock to hear that he had been attacked by a shark, which immediately brought to mind the worst case scenario, he said.

Bruce, a keen sportsman who excelled at swimming and water polo at school, matriculated from Hilton College two years ago.

His sense of adventure caused him to take a &#8220;gap year&#8221; to crew on a yacht and travel overseas before he enrolled to study civil engineering at the University of Cape Town this year.

Ragged-tooth shark

The head of research at the Natal Sharks Board, Geremy Cliff, speculated yesterday that a ragged-tooth shark may have been responsible for the attack.

&#8220;Without having sight of the wound, it is difficult to say with any certainty, but it appears on the face of it to be a fairly superficial injury, which would be consistent with a bite by a ragged-tooth shark,&#8221; he said.

He said this species is common in the Port Alfred area and is often encountered close inshore.

He said these sharks have &#8220;grabbing rather than cutting&#8221; teeth like other shark species.

&#8220;It&#8217;s almost like attacking someone with a plank of spiky nails,&#8221; Cliff added.

He said it is extremely unlucky and rare for anyone to be bitten by a shark.

&#8220;To put it in perspective, on average there are only six shark attacks in South Africa annually, of which one may be fatal.

'Risk of a shark attack is very, very small indeed'

&#8220;Taking into account the hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers who go swimming daily on all our coastlines, the risk of a shark attack is very, very small indeed,&#8221; Cliff added.

Bruce - who enjoys scuba diving - disagreed that the bite was inflicted by a ragged-tooth shark as they have rows of small, thin teeth, unlike the wounds on his foot.

The incident follows a shark attack on Peter Fraser, 27, of Rustenburg, who was badly bitten by a two-metre-long Zambezi shark while swimming at Ponta d&#8217;Ouro in Mozambique last week.

Fraser said he hit out at the shark with his flipper.

He suffered a wound of about 20?cm long on his back, lost a chunk of flesh from his right shoulder and has bites to his right upper and forearm, chest and right hand.

He was taken to a first-aid clinic by his girlfriend&#8217;s father, Kobus Latsky, from where he was airlifted to Manguzi at Kosi Bay by helicopter, and thereafter to Empangeni where he underwent surgery.

Man bitten after stepping on shark

 A man has been bitten by a shark at Avoca Beach on the New South Wales central coast.

Surf Life Saving says a small shark latched onto the back of the man's foot when he stepped on it in shallow waters.

The man then kicked it with his other foot and it let go.

He has being transported to Gosford hospital after being treated for minor injuries on the scene and may need stitches.

&#x3C;span style="font-weight: bold"&#x3E;A South African teenager has lost a leg and an arm in a shark attack in Ponte de Ora Bay in Mozambique, reports Talk Radio 702. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;

The teenage boy was airlifted to a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal after the attack on Tuesday afternoon, according to the news report.

Ponte de Orca is a popular beach holiday and diving destination just north of the South African border.

On Friday last week, a South African lifeguard was attacked and killed by a shark at Second Beach in Port St Johns.

National Sea Rescue Institute spokesman in Port St Johns, John Costello, said the 22-year-old lifeguard was seen lifting his hands in the air before being pulled off his paddle board by a shark while on duty in murky water.
