According to Czech Radio, the Foreign Ministry confirmed that a Czech man who was swimming off the coast of Marsa Alam was attacked and killed by a shark.

The man was reportedly holidaying in the popular Red Sea resort town with his wife and children through a travel agency identified as Exim Tours.

A spokesperson for Exim Tours said that the attack was unusual and that the deceased’s family hopes to return to the Czech Republic as soon as possible.

Reports of the attack first emerged on Friday evening, when a part of an unidentified body was located off the coast of a resort in Marsa Alam. It remains unclear where the man was staying and whether he was swimming alone.

According to the Czech Republic’s Foreign Ministry, local Egyptian police are investigating the attack.

This is not the first shark attack in Egypt. Shark attacks in 2015, 2010, 2009, and 2004 have killed a total of three people and injured five others.
