An Oviedo man was nipped by a shark while surfing in New Smyrna Beach this week.
The man, identified by authorities as 27-year-old Will Futato, was bitten about 12:30 p.m. Friday near the Beachway Avenue approach, said Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris.
Futato suffered a minor laceration to one of his ankles, was treated and released at the scene and continued surfing, Marris said.
Authorities were unable to determine what type of shark bit Futato. Friday’s incident is the sixth reported shark bite in Volusia County this year, with five of them occurring in New Smyrna Beach, officials said.
